<div dir="auto">Jn 21:1-19</div>

<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">At that time, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias.</div>
<div dir="auto">He revealed himself in this way.</div>
<div dir="auto">Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus,</div>
<div dir="auto">Nathanael from Cana in Galilee,</div>
<div dir="auto">Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples.</div>
<div dir="auto">Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”</div>
<div dir="auto">They said to him, “We also will come with you.”</div>
<div dir="auto">So they went out and got into the boat,</div>
<div dir="auto">but that night they caught nothing.</div>
<div dir="auto">When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore;</div>
<div dir="auto">but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.</div>
<div dir="auto">Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?”</div>
<div dir="auto">They answered him, “No.”</div>
<div dir="auto">So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat</div>
<div dir="auto">and you will find something.”</div>
<div dir="auto">So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in</div>
<div dir="auto">because of the number of fish.</div>
<div dir="auto">So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.”</div>
<div dir="auto">When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord,</div>
<div dir="auto">he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad,</div>
<div dir="auto">and jumped into the sea.</div>
<div dir="auto">The other disciples came in the boat,</div>
<div dir="auto">for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards,</div>
<div dir="auto">dragging the net with the fish.</div>
<div dir="auto">When they climbed out on shore,</div>
<div dir="auto">they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread.</div>
<div dir="auto">Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.”</div>
<div dir="auto">So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore</div>
<div dir="auto">full of one hundred fifty-three large fish.</div>
<div dir="auto">Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.</div>
<div dir="auto">Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.”</div>
<div dir="auto">And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?”</div>
<div dir="auto">because they realized it was the Lord.</div>
<div dir="auto">Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them,</div>
<div dir="auto">and in like manner the fish.</div>
<div dir="auto">This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples</div>
<div dir="auto">after being raised from the dead.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,</div>
<div dir="auto">“Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”</div>
<div dir="auto">Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”</div>
<div dir="auto">Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”</div>
<div dir="auto">He then said to Simon Peter a second time,</div>
<div dir="auto">“Simon, son of John, do you love me?”</div>
<div dir="auto">Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”</div>
<div dir="auto">Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.”</div>
<div dir="auto">Jesus said to him the third time,</div>
<div dir="auto">“Simon, son of John, do you love me?”</div>
<div dir="auto">Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time,</div>
<div dir="auto">“Do you love me?” and he said to him,</div>
<div dir="auto">“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”</div>
<div dir="auto">Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.</div>
<div dir="auto">Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger,</div>
<div dir="auto">you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted;</div>
<div dir="auto">but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands,</div>
<div dir="auto">and someone else will dress you</div>
<div dir="auto">and lead you where you do not want to go.”</div>
<div dir="auto">He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God.</div>
<div dir="auto">And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”</div>

<div dir="auto">Bishop Barron:</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">Friends, we must attend to the mystical depth of today’s Gospel. At the break of dawn, the disciples spy a mysterious figure on the distant shore who shouts out to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” When they answer in the negative, he instructs them to cast the net over the right side of the ship. When they do, they bring in a huge catch of fish.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">This fishing expedition is a symbol of the Church (the barque of Peter), across space and time, at its apostolic task of seeking souls. The life and work of the Church, John seems to be telling us, will be a lengthy, twilight struggle, a hard toil that will often seem to bear little or no fruit. But after the long night, the dawn of a new life and a new order will break, the transfigured world inaugurated by Jesus. The catch of fish that he makes possible is the totality of people that Christ will gather to himself; it is the new Israel, the eschatological Church.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">We know this through a subtle bit of symbolism. When the fish are dragged ashore, John bothers to tell us their exact number, 153—a figure commonly taken in the ancient world to signify the total number of species of fish in the sea.</div>

</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples</div>

<div dir="auto">that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,</div>

</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">Bishop Barron:</div>
<div dir="auto">Friends, in today’s Gospel, Thomas says that he will not believe in the Lord’s Resurrection unless he puts his finger in the nailmarks and his hand in Jesus’ side. Thomas is a saint especially suitable for our time. Modernity has been marked by two great qualities: skepticism and empiricism, the very qualities we can discern in Thomas.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">And when the risen Jesus reappears, he invites the doubter to look, see, and touch. But then that devastating line: “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">If we stubbornly say—even in the area of science—that we will accept only what we can clearly see and touch and control, we wouldn’t know much about reality. This helps us to better understand Jesus’ words to Thomas. It is not that we who have not seen and have believed are settling for a poor substitute for vision. No; we are being described as blessed, more blessed than Thomas. God is doing all sorts of things that we cannot see, measure, control, fully understand. But it is an informed faith that allows one to fall in love with such a God.</div>

<div dir="auto">So she ran and went to Simon Peter</div>

<div dir="auto">“They have taken the Lord from the tomb,</div>
<div dir="auto">and we don’t know where they put him.”</div>
<div dir="auto">So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.</div>
<div dir="auto">They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter</div>
<div dir="auto">and arrived at the tomb first;</div>

<div dir="auto">not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.</div>
<div dir="auto">Then the other disciple also went in,</div>
<div dir="auto">the one who had arrived at the tomb first,</div>
<div dir="auto">and he saw and believed.</div>
<div dir="auto">For they did not yet understand the Scripture</div>
<div dir="auto">that he had to rise from the dead.</div>

<div dir="auto">Take joy in everything. Start with whatever it is that burdens you the most. Whatever it is that makes you angry, sad or depressed. Whatever that is, it can potentially become one of your greatest sources of grace and joy. Seriously, it can. If the brutal Crucifixion of Jesus, the Son of God, can turn out to be the greatest event in all of human history, then your personal suffering, your burden, or even your sin can very much become a source of great joy as long as you let God transform it into part of His Resurrection!</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">This is the meaning of Easter! Easter means that nothing can keep us from the joy that God wants to give us. Nothing can steal that joy away. Sure, at times we will struggle just as Jesus did in the Agony of the Garden and the Via Dolorosa (the Way of the Cross), but those sufferings will not win. The Resurrection won with Christ and it will win with us when we cling to Him. Jesus persevered and, in the end, rose victorious. This is Easter!</div>

<div dir="auto">On hearing this Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean;</div>

<div dir="auto">he sent him back to Pilate.</div>

<div dir="auto">But all together they shouted out,</div>

<div dir="auto">— Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion</div>
<div dir="auto">that had taken place in the city and for murder. —</div>
<div dir="auto">Again Pilate addressed them, still wishing to release Jesus,</div>
<div dir="auto">but they continued their shouting,</div>
<div dir="auto">“Crucify him! Crucify him!”</div>
<div dir="auto">Pilate addressed them a third time,</div>
<div dir="auto">“What evil has this man done?</div>

<div dir="auto">With loud shouts, however,</div>
<div dir="auto">they persisted in calling for his crucifixion,</div>
<div dir="auto">and their voices prevailed.</div>

<div dir="auto">As they led him away</div>

<div dir="auto">including many women who mourned and lamented him.</div>
<div dir="auto">Jesus turned to them and said,</div>
<div dir="auto">“Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me;</div>
<div dir="auto">weep instead for yourselves and for your children</div>

<div dir="auto">Friends, today’s Gospel presents the story of the woman caught in adultery, which is one of the clearest demonstrations of what René Girard called the scapegoat mechanism.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">The scribes and Pharisees bring to Jesus a woman they had caught in adultery. Where must they have been standing and how long must they have been waiting in order to catch her? Their eagerness to find a victim is testimony to the insatiable human need for scapegoats.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">The novelty of the Gospel is revealed in Jesus’ refusal to contribute to the energy of the gathering storm: &#8220;Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.&#8221; Jesus directs the energy of scapegoating violence back toward the accusers. He unveils the dangerous secret that the unstable order of the society has been predicated upon scapegoating. The Church Fathers emphasized this point with a neat interpretive move: they imagined that Jesus was writing in the sand none other than the sins of those who were threatening the woman.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">Then we see, at least in seminal form, the new order: &#8220;Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.&#8221; The connection between Jesus and the woman is not the consequence of condemnation but rather the fruit of forgiveness offered and accepted.</div>

<div dir="auto">Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus,</div>
<div dir="auto">but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying,</div>
<div dir="auto">“This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”</div>
<div dir="auto">So to them Jesus addressed this parable:</div>
<div dir="auto">“A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father,</div>
<div dir="auto">‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’</div>
<div dir="auto">So the father divided the property between them.</div>
<div dir="auto">After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings</div>
<div dir="auto">and set off to a distant country</div>
<div dir="auto">where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.</div>
<div dir="auto">When he had freely spent everything,</div>
<div dir="auto">a severe famine struck that country,</div>
<div dir="auto">and he found himself in dire need.</div>
<div dir="auto">So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens</div>
<div dir="auto">who sent him to his farm to tend the swine.</div>
<div dir="auto">And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed,</div>
<div dir="auto">but nobody gave him any.</div>
<div dir="auto">Coming to his senses he thought,</div>
<div dir="auto">‘How many of my father’s hired workers</div>
<div dir="auto">have more than enough food to eat,</div>
<div dir="auto">but here am I, dying from hunger.</div>
<div dir="auto">I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him,</div>
<div dir="auto">“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.</div>
<div dir="auto">I no longer deserve to be called your son;</div>
<div dir="auto">treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’</div>
<div dir="auto">So he got up and went back to his father.</div>
<div dir="auto">While he was still a long way off,</div>
<div dir="auto">his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion.</div>
<div dir="auto">He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.</div>
<div dir="auto">His son said to him,</div>
<div dir="auto">‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you;</div>
<div dir="auto">I no longer deserve to be called your son.’</div>
<div dir="auto">But his father ordered his servants,</div>
<div dir="auto">‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him;</div>
<div dir="auto">put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.</div>
<div dir="auto">Take the fattened calf and slaughter it.</div>
<div dir="auto">Then let us celebrate with a feast,</div>
<div dir="auto">because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again;</div>
<div dir="auto">he was lost, and has been found.’</div>
<div dir="auto">Then the celebration began.</div>
<div dir="auto">Now the older son had been out in the field</div>
<div dir="auto">and, on his way back, as he neared the house,</div>
<div dir="auto">he heard the sound of music and dancing.</div>
<div dir="auto">He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.</div>
<div dir="auto">The servant said to him,</div>
<div dir="auto">‘Your brother has returned</div>
<div dir="auto">and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf</div>
<div dir="auto">because he has him back safe and sound.’</div>
<div dir="auto">He became angry,</div>
<div dir="auto">and when he refused to enter the house,</div>
<div dir="auto">his father came out and pleaded with him.</div>
<div dir="auto">He said to his father in reply,</div>
<div dir="auto">‘Look, all these years I served you</div>
<div dir="auto">and not once did I disobey your orders;</div>
<div dir="auto">yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends.</div>
<div dir="auto">But when your son returns</div>
<div dir="auto">who swallowed up your property with prostitutes,</div>
<div dir="auto">for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’</div>
<div dir="auto">He said to him,</div>
<div dir="auto">‘My son, you are here with me always;</div>
<div dir="auto">everything I have is yours.</div>
<div dir="auto">But now we must celebrate and rejoice,</div>
<div dir="auto">because your brother was dead and has come to life again;</div>

<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">Bishop Barron:</div>
<div dir="auto">Friends, our Gospel today is Jesus’ best-known parable, and perhaps the greatest story ever told. It tells us practically everything we need to know about our relationship to God, if we but attend to the details carefully.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">The younger son asks for his share of the estate and quickly squanders it in a faraway land—and so it always goes. We are the children of God; we have been given life, being, everything by him; we exist through him at every moment. What is represented here so vividly is the moment of sin, which means rupture or division.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">So he was forced to hire himself out so as to become a feeder of pigs. And no one gave him anything. Coming to his senses at last, he decides to break away and return to his father.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">The father sees him from a long way off, and then, throwing respectability to the wind, he comes running out to meet him. The Bible is not the story of our quest for God, but of God’s passionate, relentless quest for us. He put a ring on his son’s finger—the ring of marriage, symbolizing the reestablishment of a right relationship between us and God.</div>

But the mystery of sin is that we resist the invasion of God; we prefer to go our own way; we cling to our own prerogatives and our own narrow freedom. And the result is lifelessness. It feels like depression, like your life is going nowhere—in Dante’s language, like being “lost in a dark wood.”</span></div>

But if no life comes, the tree will be cut down. This is the note of urgency that is struck over and again in the Bible. We can run out of time. We can become so resistant to God’s grace that our leaves dry up. This is not divine vengeance; it is spiritual physics.</span></div>

<div dir="auto">Let’s look at the two basic divisions. God gave the Torah, the Law, to his people, in order that they might become a priestly people, a holy nation, a people set apart, in the hopes that they would then function as a sort of magnet to the rest of the world. But the Law didn’t take. From the very beginning, the people turned away from its dictates and became as bad as the nations around them.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">And then the prophets. Over and again we hear the call to be faithful to the Torah, to follow the ways of the Lord. The prophets turn on Israel itself repeatedly, reminding her of her sinfulness.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">And then came Jesus, God and man. Jesus did what no hero of Judaism had ever done: fulfilled the Law, remained utterly obedient to the demands of the Father, even to the point of laying down his life. He brought the Torah and the prophets thereby to fulfillment.</div>

<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">Bishop Barron:</div>
<div dir="auto">Friends, in our Gospel for the First Sunday of Lent, Luke gives us the story of the temptation in the desert. At every point in the Gospels, we are meant to identify with Jesus. God became man that man might become God. We participate in him and thereby learn what a godly life is like.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">Jesus has just been baptized; he has just learned his deepest identity and mission. And now he confronts—as we all must—the great temptations. What precisely is entailed in being the beloved Son of God?</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">First, the tempter urges him to use his divine power to satisfy his bodily desires, which Jesus dismisses with a word. Having failed at his first attempt, the devil shifts to perhaps the greatest of the temptations: power. Power is extremely seductive. Many would gladly eschew material things or attention or fame in order to get it. Jesus’ great answer in Matthew’s account of this story is &#8220;Get away, Satan!&#8221; To seek power is to serve Satan—it is stated that bluntly.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">Finally, the devil plays a subtler game—he tempts Jesus to manipulate his Father, encouraging him to jump from the temple and let angels save him. It is the temptation faced by Adam and Eve in the garden: deciding how and when God will act.</div>

</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">Bishop Barron:</div>
<div dir="auto">Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus commands us to stop judging others. He asks, “Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?” We are exceptionally good at seeing the fault in others, but we are exceptionally adept at ignoring it in ourselves.</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">There was a very popular book that came out when I was a teenager. It was called I’m Okay and You’re Okay. It represented the culture of exculpation and feeling-good-about-yourself. Not many years ago, Christina Aguilera crooned, “I am beautiful in every single way and words can’t bring me down.” Look at so many of the debates today: the attitude that is winning is one of self-invention and self-assertion. Who are you to tell me how to behave?</div>
</div>
<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q">
<div dir="auto">In all of this, we are fundamentally looking away from our guilt, our fault, our darkness. We are effectively drugging ourselves, dulling the pain of real self-consciousness. In the process, we turn ourselves into God, pretending to be absolute, flawless, and impervious to criticism. So “remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”</div>
